FDA Approves Coronavirus Antigen Test

On Saturday, the FDA officially approved an antigen test to be used to detect coronavirus. The test uses a nasal swab and can show a positive or negative result within minutes.

This particular test finds protein fragments that are typically seen in coronavirus. At this time, only the San Diego organization Quidel Corporation has been approved to use these tests, but more organizations are expected to be approved to use the tests soon.

Antigen tests are generally very accurate, especially positive results. However, there is an increased risk of false negatives when compared to PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests. According to a statement by the FDA, they expect antigen tests to play a large role in the fight against coronavirus.

On a related note, the FDA commissioner self-quarantines after being exposed to the coronavirus. He is only the latest member of Florida Man’s close circle to quarantine, isolate, or test positive.
